What?!
I do not wash my hands. I have said it. I used to be so embaressed about this and never wanted anyone to know. But, I have come to the conclusion that I am the smart one here.
I have not gotten sick since, I think it was, Christmas 04′. Enough evidence for me at this point! I know it sounds disgusting, but our bodies are amazing. Our bodies have mechanisms that fight disease, kill germs and detox all of these crazy toxins that have ended up in our environment. I wont make you hold hands with me, but here are some things to think about…
We have fallen to all of the claims made by the those in the cleaning and health industries that say that we need to kill all of these germs. They act like germs are evil. Yet, thankfully we have doctors and scientists that are raising their voices and those in the alternative health industry reminding us that it is good for our bodies to be exposed to germs. Our bodies natural defense mechanisms need to be exposed to germs so that it can learn to fight off more serious germs. We do not want to end up like bubble boy! Funny that the companies that tell us that we need to kill all these germs also praise vaccines that work under the same principle. The principle that being exposed to small amounts of something that is harmful is good for us. (This would work, if the vaccines were pure diluted pathogens without chemicals and preservatives. This is an entire different issue though!)
As for the hand washing. Are a few germs really all that bad? Not at all. I have even spent months working in a grocery store coming into contact with more germs that I can think of with all the money that I handle. Again, I have not gotten sick. Granted, I never eat with my hands! I am not asking you to be this extreme. Some of our immune systems probably could not handle this. I have even started carrying a natural soap now in my purse, because I think I was taking it a little too far!
And besides that the FDA and the AMA state that these anti-bacterial soaps do nothing more to kill germs then using a regular soap. Advertising is brilliant! The things that we believe…So, if the chemicals that are added to anti-bacterial soap do not do anything, we can stop using the soaps and save some money!
Also, to point out the one chemical that is found very often in anti-bacterial soaps, and even praised on some of the labels as if it were a good thing, is triclosan. A study, that was completed in 07′, detected this chemical in 17 out of 21 people that it tested. And there is no need for it! We are putting chemicals into our waterway and our ecosystems that serve absolutely no purpose. Also, when triclosan interacts with chlorine, which is found in nearly all of our tap water, it forms a toxin that is thought to be a probable carcinogen.
I see no reason to wait and see what other health problems all the other chemicals in our soaps turn out to create. Find a pure 100% natural soap and it is just as effective as all of the other claims that are out there! :) Go play in some dirt!
My words of wisdom: Believe in love, in possibility, in going after your dreams, in never stopping, in not existing but living - fully, unapologetically and wildly, believe that all is good, and always trust your gut.

Yay! I thought I was the only one! I’m not an obsessive hand washer either, and have not been sick all winter..ok, maybe just luck! But…. my 3 and 2 year olds have had only one sick visit to the doctor between them. My son had croup one time when he was 2, and my daughter had fifth disease when she was 1 1/2, which didn’t even need a visit to the doctor. I’m with you on this one! Don’t overdo it with the obsessive “anti-germ war”!
