Myth: The chemicals in our products have been tested for safety

by amy lee

Many of us believe and rely on the fact that the chemicals in the products that we use everyday have been tested and have been found to be safe for humans.  Yet, the reality is another story.  There are over 70,000 chemicals currently in use and over 1,000 more enter the market every year. When you look at the safety information for chemicals you will find that only 43% have any basic safety information and only 7% have full safety information.  When we focus on the common chemicals found in our household products there is only full safety data for 25% of them.

How did this happen?  It was not until 1981 that the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed.  What this Act did was grandfather in all the chemicals that were on the market at that time, without requiring any kind of consumer safety testing.  In reality we are the ones that are the experiment, yet there is no control.  So how do we find out what chemical is causing what when we are exposed to hundreds of chemicals on a daily basis?  Of these chemicals, 150 of have been linked to allergies, cancer, and asthma according to the consumer product safety commission.

It is becoming increasingly easier to find products that use all natural and organic ingredients.  You no longer have the ‘it is difficult to find safer alternatives’ excuse. What about the ‘organic products are so much more expensive’ excuse? It is actually really cheap to make your own cleaning supplies.  You only need baking soda, vinegar, and perhaps some lemon.
