Labor Workplace Safety

This picture, taken from Yahoos most emailed pictures, shows Dr. Allen Parmet pointing to a chest scan of one of his patients who is believed to have contracted a lung disease as a result of exposure to the buttery flavoring in microwave popcorn.  Makes you think twice about eating an entire bag of microwave popcorn!  If I knew this before I went to college I don’t think I would have put on my freshman 15!

Did you know? One of the flavoring chemicals used in microwave popcorn, diacetyl, is a relative of paint strippers.

There have been studies that have linked diacetyl to a lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans.  There is a higher then usual incidence of this disease in factory workers that are exposed to these fumes daily.  As of yet there have been no studies to the danger of this chemical at the low doses that the typical consumer is exposed to.  Yet, I really do not feel like we need a study to tell us that this is something that we should stay away from!
